Joomla! Secret #2 – Language Overrides

FireShot Screen Capture 008 - Newsletters I DorVDor - dorvdor megillahserver net media-galleries newsletters

Sometimes we are using our category blog menu item to show things that are not articles. In these cases it would be nice to change the text shown above to something more intuitive like “More Posts” or “More Newsletters”. Language overrides allow you to do just this.  If you happen across such a piece of text chances are you can find it as a language override and change it. Here is how:

Under Extensions -> Language Manager you will find your language override options. See the screen shot below.

If you search by value you will be searching for the actual text that appears on the site. Constant is the name of the variable that stores the value. Chances are you won’t need to search by constant. In this example we will search for “More Articles”.

In the screen shot above you will see that our search for More Articles returns several values. The first value is the one that matches the text on the site that we want to change. I can tell right away because it is the only one returned with the three periods… Go ahead and click on it to change its value. On the left side of your screen you will see that it now appears in an editable window. Change the text to what you want it to say and then hit save. When you go to your category blog you should now see your newly minted text appear. Congratulations you just wrote some code!

langaugeoverrideedit

There are hundres of langauge overrides in any given Joomla! template and they apply to componetns and modules too. If you ever find yourself wishing you could change some text just give the langauge override manager a look see and most of the time your answer will be right there.

Hope this helps!
